From the bright light big cities to reach the suburbs and rural areas. From the upper west to the eastern islands. From the beaches goes straight up to the mountain top. Yes, that’s how jazz has been going on lately in Indonesia. Jazz seems to land everywhere leaving its mark successfully. If before people thought that jazz belong only to the upper class society, now we can proudly say that jazz has reached the hearts of wider segments, from the young music listeners to the seniors, the big city residence to the country-sides. What’s even more amazing is the fact that jazz can always absorb the nuances of the surroundings, creating a whole different atmosphere for us to feel. Speaking of having jazz at the mountain, we have annual jazz event which takes place up on the mountain, 2000 meters above the sea level. Stunning scenery in breezy mountanuous tropical climate with the temperature around 14-18°C (about 57-65°F) during daylight and hit as low as 6-10°C (42-50°F) at night. Located at the Tengger Mountain at Java Banana Bromo, JAZZ GUNUNG will come to its 3rd installment. The tagline “Cool Music, Fresh Air” or in Indonesian they refer to “Lebih Asik, Lebih Segar” (“Cooler, Fresher”) is definately perfect to describe the different nuance you will get from this annual event. If the previous two editions have given a new sensation and experience, this time it’s going to be the same again, or might be even better with the stage’s set to move into the further back where the magnificent scenery can be viewed better.
The first ever Jazz Gunung was held 2 years ago (july 25, 2009), featuring artists like Kua Etnika, the artiste Djaduk Ferianto and Trie Utami. It was the first time jazz landed in such a high location and successfully promoted the venue to be a new favorite tourists site. (Read our report here). The second one on July 3, 2010 was held with even more artists such as ESQI:EF (Syaharani and the QueenFireworks), Balawan & Batuan Ethnic fusion, C26 Jazz Community Surabaya, Androginn’s Malang Jazz Forum and Monday Night Band Yogya. Again, this second round received good praises from everyone. (Read the report of 2nd Jazz Gunung here). In both editions Butet Kartaredjasa contributed big deal in making the crowds felt comfortable with his jokes and familiarity. Here comes the third edition, the JAZZ GUNUNG 2011 with the fresh lineup such as Tohpati Ethnomission, Glenn Fredly, Kua Etnika & Djaduk Ferianto ft Trie Utami and Maya Hasan, and Kramat Ensemble Percussion Ethnic Madura. Butet Kartaredjasa and Djaduk Ferianto will once again act as the host of the whole event.
